Exclusions and Notices

For the protection of all children, the school administrator shall exclude from attendance any child having or suspected of having a communicable condition listed in 25 Administrative Code 97.7(a) until the readmission criteria for the condition are met. Any child excluded for reason of communicable disease may be readmitted, as determined by the health authority, by:

  • Submitting a certificate of the attending physician, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant attesting that the child does not currently have signs or symptoms of a communicable disease or to the disease's non-communicability in a school setting;
  • Submitting a permit for readmission issued by a local health authority; or
  • Meeting readmission criteria as established by the commissioner.

The guidelines below have been developed for the exclusion of students who have or are suspected of having a communicable illness.  These regulations are in compliance with the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Centers for Disease Control. Texas Notifiable Conditions

Please do not send your child to school if they are ill with:   

  • Fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, or any condition that presents with fever - students will be excluded until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever suppressing medications
  • Diarrheal illnesses - students will be excluded until they are diarrhea free for 24 hours without the use of diarrhea suppressing medications (Diarrhea is 3 or more episodes of loose stools in a 24-hour period)
  • Vomiting, especially if accompanied by symptoms, such as headache, fever, stiff neck, disorientation and sleepiness.
  • Painful muscle spasms and stiffness of head, neck, and jaw
  • Undetermined rash over any part of the body
  • Undiagnosed scaly patches on the body or scalp   
  • Red eyes with discharge or crusting around the eyes
  • Open, draining lesions or wounds (especially if unable to be contained and maintained in a clean dry bandage)
  • Jaundice or yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Other signs and symptoms that may indicate a communicable illness 

The school administrator/principal, nurse or designee will notify the student's parent or guardian that the student is to be excluded for health reasons.

It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to transport the student from school to his/her home or physician.
